i am having trouble trying to make the main page display everything in a blog post. it always truncates a post – i would like to at least display the embedded images or videos so visitors can see a preview of the content – not just the text. I don’t mind if the post is truncated – just that i want to include the image/video in the preview…

You can display it by adding them in the blog post excerpt area as described on the below pages.
