It is not mandatory to set the Homepage settings option as displayed in your shared screenshots.
If it is working on one browser but not other then it is not website issue but browser issue as it is working fine for me on all browsers.
As asked above, have you made sure that you are using the latest version of browsers and disabled all browser extensions?

How can I remove the white room?
You can remove it by adding the following CSS code in the Custom CSS code option of your theme on the below path.

Btw does the beta update affect the chid theme in any way? I updated the theme folder but left the child theme folder untouched. That shouldn’t be a problem should it?
No the update won’t affect the child theme and there won’t be any problem.
