Is it possible to display the social media icons directly in the header navigation bar instead of that odd drop down thing?

You can display it in the Topbar as shown in the below demo site.

To display it in the Topbar, please enable it in the theme Topbar, Header settings and configure social media options as shown in the attached screenshots.
